Dr. Harold R Hickman

Dr. Harold Hickman is an Emeritus Professor of the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University (NAU); where he taught Mass Communication and Broadcasting courses for twenty years.  He is the former owner of KONY-FM and KUNF-AM in St. George.  He also built and managed KLVX-TV, Channel 10, (PBS) in Las Vegas, Nevada and KOET-TV, Channel 9, (ETV) in Ogden, Utah. L He holds degrees in Speech and Theatre from Southern Utah University, the University of Utah, and his doctorate from the Department of Speech and Theatre in the College of Fine Arts at Brigham Young University (BYU).  He served as Chair of the Speech Communication Department and Assistant Dean of the School of Communication at NAU.  He was Assistant Director of the Motion Picture Studios at BYU and Assistant Professor of Communication at that school.

Hal has published a textbook titled “Television Directing” through McGraw-Hill, New York, and has completed manuscripts for “Horn Silver,” a history of the ghost town: Frisco, Utah, and “Passage” (a novel.)  He is working on a book dealing with visual perception, visual theory and the application of those concepts on moving images called: “Images.”   He has presented a number of academic papers on this subject over the years.

Hal has written four plays:  “Case Before the Court” (a musical farce,) “Satan Came With Them” (an historical drama based on the court trials of John D. Lee,) “Front Porch” (a comedy/drama) and “House Ghost” (a comedy.)  He has also acted in a number of plays: “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Mornings at Seven,” “The Merchant of Venice,” and “Teacher’s Lounge.”  He has directed “Our Town” (three times,) “The Fantastiks,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” ”Arsenic and Old Lace,” “Harvey” and “Miracle on 34th Street.”  He has produced hundreds of TV programs.

Dr. Hickman serves on the Advisory Board to the Utah Office of Museum Services and the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Volunteer Center in St. George, Utah.  He has served as a board member and chair of the Pioneer Center for the Arts Museum in the past. 

He was a member of the Flagstaff Master Chorale, the Heritage Choir, and san tenor with a number of championship barbershop quartets through the SPEBSQSA:  “Whistlestop,” “The Latter-day Sounds,” and “The Four Part Invention.”  He has dabbled in oil and acrylic painting and has produced ten or so canvasses, which he currently stores in his garage out of the public’s sight.

Dr. Hickman is retired and currently lives in St. George, Utah with his wife of 52 years, Joan.  They have four children, twelve grandchildren, and (soon) one great-grandchild.

Angel Dawn Hickman is a graduate of the University of Utah Film School. She is currently working on several full-length feature film projects as well as corporate and private video productions.

Her own production company, Angel Dawn Productions operates in association with DragonHearth on a variety of joint projects.
